For a few days now, I have been considering a thought on the subject of trust in God.

How do men trust God amid uncertainties?

What do they know that keeps them trusting when “it doesn’t make sense”?

Job, in all his ordeals, said, “Though He slays me, yet will I trust Him…” And that makes me to wonder how men arrive at that kind of trust, believing that the God of the universe always has their best interest at heart, hence journeying through life with almost no worries.

An offshoot of that reflection is an event in John 11. Verses 5 and 6 caught my attention, but that will be a conversation for another day. (you might want to read and ponder on those verses)

There is a popular verse of the bible we quote regularly, but sometimes, I fear that its popularity often stops us from giving it all the attention it deserves.

Romans 8:28 as rendered in the Amplified version reads:

“And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose.”

The question is, ‘If we know this, why are we then afraid in the days of uncertainty or even clear calamities?’

One of my revered ministers of the Gospel, Pastor Chingtok Ishaku, gave an illustration in one of his sermons one day when he was preaching on the subject of faith and trust in God. And I will try and describe the same as much as possible.

Imagine scenario A, where Jane is kidnapped and blindfolded. The passage of time and even movement increases her fear and anxiety, knowing it’s an event that cannot result in anything positive. In another scenario, imagine the same Jane being blindfolded by her fiancé in order to show her something. What do you think the passage of time does for her?

Yes, just like you had thought. Her excitement and anticipation increase.

What changed is not being blindfolded, what changed is who put a blindfold on her and is with her in that moment.

You see, knowing and understanding the person leading you is so critical to how you feel in this journey of life, and while it is costly to assume that it is God who is leading you, I am imploring that you give yourself to His leadership and the understanding of His person.

Now, read Romans 8:28 again. and you might want to ponder on John 17:3 too - Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. The hint to understanding that scripture is knowing that eternal life is not primarily long life, but rather that life of God.

In simple words, to live like God is to know God. And having an in-depth understanding of His person unlocks a worry-less life, causing you to trust him more ‘even when it doesn’t make sense’. Ponder on this as you go through the week.
